SpinRite originally introduced the concept of non-destructive low-level reformatting and sector interleave optimization all of which basically means that the software can read, analyze, correct then rewrite every tiny bit of data on a hard drive, re-establishing the formatting, without losing any original data, without screwing up your files (they'll work better actually) or messing up your partitions (they'll work better too), or fouling up the factory low-level formatting of any hard drive. SpinRite has been under continuous development for 16 years (since v1 in 1988) and is probably the most popular disk data recovery tool on the market today.

Bad blocks that SpinRite 6.0 skips, maybe test case for 6.1
In the grc.spinrite forum, I posted a situation that I am having with a 2TB drive. I have 8 consecutive bad sectors (3,188,632,392 through 3,188,632,399 on a 2TB drive of 3,907,029,168 total sectors). My cloning software sees that these sectors are bad, but SpinRite does not. When I run SpinRite within a range to specifically target those bad sectors, for some reason SpinRite just keeps going to completion without starting up the dynastat process. My old PC is retired as a backup now, but I recently had to replace its HD, and decided to compare SpinRite 6's performance with what I had previously gotten with SpinRite 5. Dear Steve, It would be great if Spinrite was compatible with virtual machines. Thus the physical hardware would not need to be dedicated to only Spinrite operation. I would appreciate some advice to influence a decision on whether to buy Spinrite 6; I haven't used Spinrite before. Is there a recommended sequence to running Spinrite 6 for maintenance? For example, would it be level 1 first then either 3 or 4 to fix surface or error problems? In laymen's terms what is the difference between levels 3 and 4 and, what are the end results? SpinRite is a stand-alone DOS program designed to refurbish hard drives, floppy disks and recover data from marginally or completely unreadable hard drives and floppy disks and from partitions and folders which have become unreadable. Did we just say DOS? Yes. There are certain things you really can\'t do properly in Windows. The explanation is that while the operating system is running it\'s very difficult to get access to hardware and systems which function ahead of the operating system. SpinRite originally introduced the concept of non-destructive low-level reformatting and sector interleave optimization all of which basically means that the software can read, analyze, correct then rewrite every tiny bit of data on a hard drive, re-establishing the formatting, without losing any original data, without screwing up your files (they\'ll work better actually) or messing up your partitions (they\'ll work better too), or fouling up the factory low-level formatting of any hard drive. Dear Steve, It would be great if Spinrite was compatible with virtual machines. Thus the physical hardware would not need to be dedicated to only Spinrite operation.
