Well, I'll be damned. It totally worked!
Installed the new EEPROM, and flashed with macjunkie's genuine FX 4800 Mac ROM. Worked flawlessly!Note: I had to put the card in the top x16 PCIe slot of my Mac Pro (Jan 2008). The display didn't come up if it was in the bottom slot, and I noticed that the fan turned off after a few seconds as well. Maybe I need to reset the Mac's nvram.I've attached an image from System Profiler showing the FX 4800.Just to recap, here's the entire procedure:1.
Got a Dell OEM Quadro FX 4800 off eBay. The card has one DVI port and two DisplayPorts.2. Purchased an SST SST25LF020A 256KB EEPROM from Digi-key. It is one of the few 256 KB ROMs supported by NVFlash.3. Took apart the card and removed the existing 128 KB EEPROM.
It was a Macronix MX25L1005. This same EEPROM is on my OEM GeForce 8800GT, which shipped with the Mac Pro from Apple so they must be common.4. Installed the new SST EEPROM. Put the card back together.5. Installed the FX 4800 and an ATI 5770 in my PC, which has two PCIe x16 slots like the Mac Pro (both use Intel server boards).
I had to use a separate card to drive my PC's display, since the FX 4800's new EEPROM was blank.6. Booted into DOS from a USB disk. Ran NVFlash using the following command: nvflash -index=0 -4 -5 -6 FX4800M.ROM. Accepted all warnings.7.
After a while, NVFlash verified the flash and reported it as successful!8. Put the card in the Mac Pro, and BOOM! I'm typing this right now while it's driving my display!Many, many thanks to macjunkie for the ROM and also to Rominator for his helpful posts! You guys are my heroes!
Just a follow-up. The 4800 has been working okay, with a few issues.1.
Sometimes the card will 'turn off' at boot, halting POST. When I turn the Mac on, the fan starts to spin, then turns off. The machine hangs until I power cycle it. It seems to be an intermittent problem, which has me worried.2. When it does boot up, the fan on the 4800 seems to be running at 100% all the time.
When the machine first turns on, the fan is running slow, but (I suspect as soon as EFI kicks in), the fan immediately goes to 100%. It stays that way until the machine is shut down.I don't think the card is overheating, since when it works I don't get any glitches. I even ran some Steam games and it seems to be rock-solid.Perhaps I need to patch the Mac EFI ROM with the original PC BIOS code. The difference in the cards (two DVI vs. Single DVI and two DisplayPorts) may be such that the Mac ROM is not 100% compatible. Well, that's obviously the case since the fan is running at full speed all the time.Logged.
